Kolkata: The Congress high command is irked over West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s move to assign its leaders significant posts without getting approval of the party leadership.

The matter came to light when Mamata gave the responsibility of West Bengal Infrastructure Development Finance Corporation to Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee’s son Abhijit without consulting the party leadership.

There was brouhaha in the Congress over Abhijit’s appointment as the Chairperson of the corporation.

According to sources, the Congress high command directed Bengal Congress president Pradeep Bhattacharya to shoot off a missive to the Trinamool Congress chief in this context.

Initially, the Congress had chosen to ignore Abhijit’s episode. But the party took tough stand when PCC spokesperson Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, who is considered to be Pranab’s confidant, was given a Rajya Sabha ticket by Trinamool.

Sources said, when the matter reached Congress president Sonia Gandhi, she directed the state in-charge Shakeel Ahmed to intervene in the issue.

Sensing that the political ambience is hotting up, Abhijit has announced to step down from the corporation post. He could, sources said, be shouldered with the responsibility of state general secretary.
