A large number of state employees were present in their offices, defying the strike called by Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) and All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC).  “Those who worked today will get extra holiday on Puja,” Mamata Banerjee said.

Earlier, hardening her stand against the strike called by central trade unions, she said there will be no 'bandh' in the state and warned of strong action against those who disrupted public life.

Banerjee said her government is also planning to introduce a new law under which those who ransack and damage property during bandhs will be made to pay compensation. "We will make a law on this. I had a discussion on this with the chief secretary," she told reporters.
