Kolkata: Old is gold, feel people of Kolkata who still take pride in calling tram, hand-pulled rickshaws, Howrah bridge and Victoria Memorial as their heritage. Despite the futile effort of the Left government for 34 years to give a facelift to Kolkata and make it Shanghai, the ruling Mamata Banerjee government is also striving for changing it to London.

In a bid to renovate the city, the Left government tried to streamline transportation of Kolkata in line with Shanghai.

According to sources, former Environment Minister Subhas Chakraborty wanted to construct flyovers and elevated ring roads. Not only this, he had also made announcement of running trams below the Ganges. Unfortunately, before materializing the plan, Chakraborty passed away.

Now, following the steps taken by her predecessors, Mamata government is also making efforts to bring the city at par with London and pilot project in this regard may start from August 1.
