Kolkata: Facing the blaze of Opposition’s attack regarding hooch tragedy in the state, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee came down heavily on the police machinery ordering them to stop sale of all kinds of illegal liquor in the state.

Notably, 190 people especially poor labourers lost their lives after consuming moonshine in South 24 Parganas district in Dec last year.

Mamata Banerjee on Monday held a high level meeting of senior officials and asked them to take strict action against the sale and production of hooch.

Kolkata Mayor and Industry Minister Partha Chaterjeee, state Chief Secretary, Home Secretary, among others participated in the meeting.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister also expressed her concerns over the growing incidents of fire tragedy in the capital. Chief Minister Banerjee also proposed opening of six new fire brigade centers and recruiting 2,000 new personnel for the department. The government has also planned to train volunteers and scouts in fire fighting skills.

The city recently witnessed several cases of fire in buildings and hospitals that claimed many innocent lives.
