New Delhi (JPN/Bureau): Union Railways Minister Mamata Banerjee has created a record of sorts in her last two Budget announcements. It is an altogether different matter that most schemes are still pending. Most of the schemes on which work has begun are centred in West Bengal.

Consider these statistics: the state saw inauguration of at least 127 railway programs and 56 were launched by Didi herself. Rest of the country cannot boast about so many projects in totality. Very few were in turn attended by Mamata, with state ministers or senior Railways officials cutting the ribbon for most schemes.

Here is a small list of schemes inaugurated in West Bengal: Farmers Vision Scheme, Special Freight Train Operator scheme, Private Freight Terminal scheme and Automobile Freight Train scheme in the restive Singur. Bids are being called for a sister concern of Chittaranjan Locomotive Works in Dankuni which also saw the freight corridor work start for the state up to Chandanpur.

RITES has been given the consultancy contract for New Jalpaiguri Excel Factory. An MoU has been signed between NTPC and Railways for a power plant at Adra. Mamata has even given the Kolata Metro status of Zone. She also started trains like Mother (Teresa) Express, Vivekanand Express and Sanskriti (Rabindranath Tagore) Express.

For whole India, the two big things that Mamata has done are the introduction of Duranto trains and a Catering Policy in 2010. Apart from these, in order to start hospitals on railway lands in Kharagpur, Guwahati, Chennai, Secundarabad and Lucknow, Expressions of Interest have been invited from various health players in recent days. Similarly, a few days back, a selection for making multi functional complexes at six railway stations has been taken.

Trains now have five-digit serial numbers since December 2010 to make the PRS system better. A process has also been initiated for a new recruitment policy and land encroachment issue. Trial of air conditioned double-decker coaches is also underway.
