Pathanamthitta (Kerala): The wildlife department on Wednesday registered a case against a man in connection with the death of a leopard which had strayed into a village near here.

The man has been charged under the Wildlife Act based on the post-mortem which found the animal had died of suffocation as its mouth was covered with a piece of cloth and limbs bound by a rope, officials said.

The accused man, who allegedly led a crowd to capture the feline, was admitted in a hospital with injuries he sustained while trying to overpower the leopard, they said

The leopard had strayed into a rubber estate in Angamuzhi village on Tuesday, triggering panic among villagers.

A group of people, led by the accused, soon overpowered the leopard and bound its limbs with a rope and covered its mouth with a cloth.

The leopard was later handed over to wildlife officials, who found the animal dead.
