Kolkata: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Pranab Mukherjee on Thursday called up Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee and thanked her for deciding to support UPA's Presidential poll candidate.

Trinamool Congress' Rajya Sabha MP Kunal Ghosh said that Banerjee called up the Prime Minister and told him about the party's decision prior to her press conference where she announced it publicly.

Earlier, Banerjee said at the press conference that the Prime Minister and Congress president Sonia Gandhi had rung her up requesting her party's support for Mukherjee.

Shortly after Banerjee announced that her party would vote for Mukherjee, the UPA candidate called her up to thank her for the decision.

"Yes, he rang me up and I requested him to visit West Bengal first after winning the election," Banerjee said.
