Jharkhand: An activist, who objected to the improper implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA), was allegedly lynched by Maoists in Latehar district.

Latehar Superintendent of Police Prabhat Kumar said that MNREGA activist Niyamat Ansari died after he was beaten up by lathis. “Although no one has claimed the responsibility, modus operandi indicates Maoist involvement in the incident. Both the hands were tied before he was lathi-charged,” Kumar said.

Niyamat’s sister has lodged an FIR against zonal commander of Bhagpa Maoists along with eight others. She alleged that 16 unidentified people reached the house of a resident of Jerua village, Bhukan Singh. After Bhukan was untraceable, they reached Niyamat’s house, attacked him and fled. Niyamat was admitted to a local hospital where he died at 10 pm.

Niyamat, who was working with noted economist Jean Dreze on proper implementation of MNREGA, had raised objections against the improper implementation of the scheme and other issues.

"He used to highlight problems and irregularities in the implementation of schemes at Jan Adalats organised by the district administration, which might have angered certain people," a close friend of Niyamat said in Latehar.
