New Delhi: Amidst hue and cry for the biennial elections for the two Rajya Sabha seats from the state, Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (JVM) supremo Babulal Marandi has demanded for the cancellations of the elections as money power is being used to influence the poll process.

Submitting a memorandum to the Election Commission, Marandi apprised the statutory body of the present scenario of RS polls being conducted in the state and advocated for cancellation of election process.

This time six candidates have filed nominations for the Rajya Sabha elections. However, none of them have the priority votes of 27 MLAs. Apart from these five candidates, London-based NRI Anshuman Mishra had also filed the nomination paper as an independent candidate on the support of BJP MLAs. Mishra apparently had the blessings of BJP president Nitin Gadkari. Interestingly, the saffron party did not renew the tenure of Deputy Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, SS Ahluwalia and backed Mishra.

In the BJP parliamentary party meeting, senior party leader like Yashwant Sinha along with Nawada MP Bhola Singh raised direct question over the party’s decision to support Anshuman Mishra in the Upper House elections. Later, Mishra withdrew his nomination paper.

Marandi said, “Money power is being misused in the RS polls breaching the very structure of democratic set up in the country. The particular MLA became proposer in the nominations of several candidates flouting the norms for RS polls.”

Reminded the Election Commission about the misuse of money in RS polls in 2010, the JVM chief informed, “The FIRs were registered against four MLAs for taking bribe in the RS polls in 2010 and this time the numbers can go up. Therefore, investigations should be initiated.” He demanded that fresh notification to be issued to conduct free and fare elections to the Rajya Sabha.”
