Singapore: China's Peng Shuai was outclassed by second seed Maria Sharapova at the French Open on Saturday, leaving her compatriot, defending champion Li Na, as Asia's only hope for a singles title.

The Russian, making a bid for the only Grand Slam trophy she has not lifted, took just over an hour to beat Peng 6-2, 6-1 to enter the final 16.

Peng, now ranked 30th in the world after a career-high 14 last year, had no answer to Sharapova's blistering returns and baseline shots.

Peng, the 2010 Asian Games singles gold medallist, remained in contention with partner Zheng Jie for the women's doubles title.
