New Delhi: Raising the issue of safety of women in the national capital, thousands of people on Wednesday hit the streets and demanded speedy trial in the Sunday night's gang rape case that shocked the entire nation.

Protestors shouted slogans against Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit accusing her of not doing anything for the safety and security of women and shifting the blame on police.

The protests reverberated across the country in the form of demonstrations and candle light vigils. This found reflection in the Parliament too with MPs condemning the barbaric act and demanding speedy justice in the case.

Women MPs of the NDA staged sit-in protest against the Central Government and the Delhi Government in the premises of Parliament over repeated instances of rape.

The heinous crime took place on Sunday night when the girl and a male friend boarded a private bus with tinted glasses. It moved along the bustling south Delhi areas of Munirka, Vasant Vihar and Mahipalpur as the men raped and tortured the girl and beat her friend, using iron rods. The couple was stripped, robbed and thrown off the bus near Mahipalpur.

The male friend was also taken to Safdarjung hospital but discharged after treatment while the girl victim is still battling for life.
