Kohima: A huge quantity of contraband opium, ganja, banned drugs and Indian Made Foreign Liquor were destroyed in two interior Nagaland districts on Friday.

In Mon district, the Excise Department destroyed 1576 bottles IMFL valued at Rs 6 lakh, 2.8 kg of opium valued at Rs 3 lakh in presences of district and police officials and NGOs.

In Phek district, 793 kg of ganja valued at Rs 3 lakh, 1316 bottles of IMFL valued at Rs 4 lakh and 2000 capsule of spasmo proxyvon capsules were destroyed.

Mon district Superintendent of Excise, Jongpong Sangtam said fines imposed on peddlers would be deposited in banks through challan as revenue for Government.

He said that during 2011-12 the Department of Excise, Mon earned revenue of Rs 31,000 which increased to Rs 47,000 during 2012-13.

Jongpong said that the department headed by the Commissioner of Excise, Moangwati contributed revenue of Rs 1 crore annually.
