Mumbai: Vishal Bhardwaj has got his biggest opening ever with his last release Matru Ki Bijli Ka Mandola. Incidentally, it also makes Imran Khan’s biggest opening ever. The collections stand at Rs 20 crore in its opening weekend.

However, much was expected out of this hyped release and the trade feels that although the collections are decent, it falls short of expectations. Matru opened at Rs 6.02 crore on Friday, Rs 6.65 crore on

Saturday and jumped to Rs 7.90 crore on Sunday making its weekend total Rs 20.57 crore. On the other hand Table No 21 has managed to collect Rs 8.57 crore after the second weekend. Meanwhile, Dabangg 2 is sitting pretty at Rs 148.50 crore.

Trade analyst Amod Mehra says, “The opening of Matru was shockingly bad as the promos had generated quite some curiosity. However, the audience did not come in and Saturday was more or less the same as Friday. Sunday was a face-saver. The audiences have not liked the film. It has landed in no man’s land as it is neither an art film nor a commercial film. People don’t care about zameendars and farmers’ issues anymore. The collections in single-screens dropped but multiplexes were okay during the weekend.”

According to trade expert Atul Mohan, Matru opened with mixed response but has managed to bring in decent collections over the weekend. He adds, “Plus there are a couple of holidays, which could boost the collections. The collections are not so bad.”
