Mayawati said BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi and Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav are conscious of the fact that they would not be winning from Varanasi and Azamgarh Lok Sabha constituencies respectively, adding that  they are trying to communalise the elections.

“Both Modi and Mulayam know they are losing from Varanasi and Azamgarh respectively and that is why there are attempts to use the communal and caste cards,” Mayawati said.

“Both SP and BJP have tried to communalize the atmosphere in the 'Poorvanchal' region. Now, a new drama in Varanasi. Both are colluding,” she added.

Mayawati also criticized the decision by the Election Commission to cancel Modi’s rally in Varanasi and said it shows how the administration is working under the Samajwadi Party’s orders.

Meanwhile, Janata Dal (United) spokesperson KC Tyagi said the BJP was planning to polarize people in Beniyabagh like they did in 91 during a rally when riots happened. Tyagi thanked the Election Commission for its brave decision.

Upping the ante against Election Commission for denying him permission to perform prayers at the banks of the river Ganga and two other events in Varanasi, Modi earlier in the day chided the election watchdog and said that the poll body is not concerned about institution’s neutrality.

Modi also justified the protest roadshow planned by BJP in Varanasi on Thursday, which has started in the holy city with many top brass BJP leaders gathering in the holy city.
