Lucknow: Leaving no stone unturned to retain Dalit vote-bank, Mayawati-led Uttar Pradesh government has now found a new way to lure them. By showing its benevolence for the harassed Dalits, the state government has now decided to lay emphasis on the rehabilitation, education and employment of those who have been victims of harassment.

In this regard, UP SC/ST (Model contingency plan) 2011 will be set up soon. A blueprint for the same has been already formulated.

Till date, the state government was providing compensation to victims on the basis of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Rules, 1995 which comprises the provisions for economic assistance being provided for different matters of harassment.

In the proposed plan, more emphasis has been laid on the education of the harassed children. Children under 18 years of age facing the trial of murder would be given free education, maintenance cost and health facilities. If someone’s house has been desecrated, the government would construct a concrete house and the aggrieved family would be given a maintenance allowance of Rs 5000 per month.

Principal Secretary of Social Welfare, Sadakant said, “The motive is to make the Dalits feel that they are secure like any other community and so the main focus is on nutrition.” By having a good education, Dalits can join the mainstream society, he added.
