Lucknow: The fate of local body elections in Uttar Pradesh is now dependent on the decision of the High Court as Chief Minister Mayawati has refused to give a go-ahead to the State Election Commission to hold the civic polls.

The government has refused permission on the grounds that they are not prepared to hold the election at this stage.

It is to be noted that the Election Commission had suggested the state government to conduct urban local body elections between September 24 and November 5, as the term of the existing elected bodies expires on November 30.

Durga Shankar Mishra, Principal Secretary, Urban Development, said the government has intimated the Commission about its position on Friday. However, Election Commission officials denied having received any such intimation.

Any clear picture over the holding of the election would now emerge on September 27 when the Allahabad High Court hears the matter. The High Court had asked the state government to clear its stand on the issue by September 27.
