Lucknow: With the model code of conduct for coming polls in force, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati's 56th birthday on Saturday was low key minus announcements of development projects, acceptance of lavish gifts, extravagant arrangements and active participation of the bureaucracy.

Mayawati held a press conference at the party office here to announce candidates for the Assembly polls in which she slammed the EC for covering her statues and appealed to voters for a majority.

"Due to elections, I have directed all party workers and well wishers to celebrate my birthday within their families. As a birthday gift, I want absolute majority in these elections too", she said trying to strike an emotional chord with her party cadre.

Except party leaders, including Nasimuddin Siddiqui and Swami Prasad Maurya, there was no crowd of party workers in the office. Also absent were state bureaucrats.

After the conference, Mayawati spent some time informally interacting with media persons before leaving the place.

The UP Chief Minister's birthday celebrations in the past had been a much hyped affair often courting controversy over extravagant arrangements, active participation of bureaucracy or for observing it as "arthik sahyog diwas (monetary help day)".

Last year, she had cut massive cakes and announced around 600 new projects on her birthday.
