New Delhi: Offering a bumper discount to the property owners, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ruled Delhi Municipal Corporation has decided to exempt them from penalty while collecting outstanding property tax between November 15 and December 31.

The property owners will only be required to pay the property tax arrears. According to sources, the move has been initiated in wake of the forthcoming MCD polls scheduled in 2012.

Moreover, in order to increase the revenue from property taxes, the MCD has called a special meeting for the first time on Tuesday. Inspectors of Property Tax Departments in all zones have been asked to be present in the meeting chaired by Property Tax Committee Chairman Ved Prakash Gupta.

Though this is a first effort by the BJP to recover property tax on a large scale but Gupta assured that even after the conclusion of the elections, the officers are told to collect more and more property tax. Also, more thrust will be laid on collecting tax from commercial properties as compared to posh accommodations.

According to the Property Tax Department, property tax worth crores is due on malls, motels and guest houses for which the MCD has issued several reminders but to no avail.
