Chandigarh (JPN/Bureau): Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni on Sunday said media needed to exercise restraint for maintaining credibility of media in the country. In order to achieve this aim and at the same time ensure freedom of press, the minister mooted the formation of a special body that would overlook these aspects in the media sector.

Providing details of her plan for the media watchdog, she said there would be twelve members on the panel which will include a Chairman who would either be a retired judge of a High Court or a sitting judge of the Supreme Court.

She also said it would be her endeavour to see that the recommendations of Justice Majithia
wage boards for the newspaper industry were implemented soon. In this regard her ministry has constituted a fund worth Rs 10 cr for welfare of journalists.

"It will be my endeavour to see that the recommendations are not only accepted but the anomalies are also removed," she said at the annual meet of the Chandigarh Punjab Unit of Journalists (CPUJ) here.

Nobody could force the government to accept any unjustified demand, the Minister said.
