Elite commandos of the Indian Army also went a few kilometers inside the Myanmar territory to destroy two camps of insurgents hiding there after their attacks in Manipur last week by NSCN(K) and KYKL outfits.     

In view of this outstanding operation we are listing here all commando units of the country.

National Security Guards (Black Cat Commandos):

It was established in 1984 after Operational Bluestar that caused widespread damage in the Golden Temple complex. NSG also known as Black Cat is India's premier counter-terrorist force. It provides security to VIP's, conducts anti-sabotage checks, and is responsible for neutralizing terrorist threats to vital installations. NSG's missions include engaging terrorists in specific situations, responding to piracy in the air and on the land, and rescuing hostages in kidnap situations. The force was modelled on the pattern of the special Air Services of United Kingdom and GSG-9 of Germany.

Special Frontier Force:

SFF, India's secret force of Tibetans, was created on 14 November 1962. SFF's main goal originally was to conduct covert operations behind Chinese lines in the event of another Sino-Indian War. It is a dedicated mountain and jungle warfare unit. Based in Chakrata, Uttarakhand, the force was put under the direct supervision of the Intelligence Bureau, and later, the Research and Analysis Wing, India's external intelligence agency.  The SFF's weapons were all provided by the US and consisted mainly of M-1, M-2 and M-3 machine guns. Heavy weapons were not provided.

Special Protection Group:

It was formed in 1988 by an Act of Parliament to provide proximate security to the Prime Minister of India and former Prime Ministers and  their immediate family members. The superitendence, direction and control of the SPG is exercised by, the Central Government. Members of the SPG are barred by the SPG Act,1988, from contact with the media and from publishing or collaborating in publication of any book, letter or other document.

Para Commandos:

Created on July 1, 1966 the Para Commandos are the other side of the coin of the highly trained Parachute Regiment of the Indian Army. It is a special forces unit of the Indian Army mandated with missions such as special operations, direct action, hostage rescue and counter-terrorism. Because of its specified role, the regiment needs to be kept at optimum level of operational efficiency and physical fitness.

MARCOS:

Previously named as Marine Commando Force (MCF), MARCOS is the special operations unit of the Indian Navy which was estblished in 1987. It was created for conducting special operations such as amphibious warfare, counter-terrorism, direct action, Unconventional warfare, hostage rescue and personnel recovery. The MCF currently operates from the naval bases at Mumbai, Visakhapatnam, Goa, Kochi and Port Blair.

Garud Commando Force:

It is an Indian Air Force unit which was unveiled in February 2004. It primarily protects Indian Air Force installations from terrorist attacks. Garud trainees undergo a 72 week Basic Training course, which is the longest among all the Indian special forces.
