Lucknow: Once considered a close lieutenant of BSP supremo Mayawati, former Uttar Pradesh Family Welfare Minister Babu Singh Kushwaha has created ripples in UP politics. His inclusion in the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) after being sacked from the BSP for his alleged role in NRHM scam has landed him in a soup.

With recent CBI raids on his premises for swindling funds in National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) project, it is likely that Kushwaha will be put behind the bars.

Belonging to a mediocre family, Babu Singh Kushwaha was born in a Pakhrauli village of Banda district. Completing his graduation in 1985, Kushwaha started earning his livelihood by opening a timber godown.

The tainted minister climbed the ladder of success after coming in contact with founder of BSP  Kanshi Ram in 1988. Appointed as party worker, Kushwaha was called to New Delhi where he worked for six months. Later , he joined Lucknow office to handle the responsibility of the camp.

In 1993, when the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the BSP entered into an alliance, Kushwaha was appointed party president of Banda district. Thereafter, Mayawati shifted him to Lucknow office and made him work as a telephone operator. It was in 1997 when Kushwaha got a major break after he was appointed a member of the state Assembly.

During the third tenure of BSP as ruling dispensation in UP, Kushwaha was made Minister of Panchayati Raj. In 2007, when the BSP took full command of the state, Babu Singh was given several important departments and appointments to handle. He was also assigned with handling newly created Family Welfare Department. The series of events clearly indicated that Kushwaha was one of the close aides of Mayawati.

However, Kushwaha’s life took a major turn with double CMO murders and exposure of NRHM scam under which hefty amounts were swindled. He along with state Health Minister Anant Kumar Mishra submitted resignation on July 17, 2010.

On November 19, he accused several party functionaries of  threatening him. However, within nine days after the incident  he was sacked from the party and after hobnobbing with Congress leaders, Kushwaha finally joined the BJP.
