Patna: In a hard-hitting letter to Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Bihar Chief Minister expressed his displeasure over the comparison of the financial package given to West Bengal with that of Bihar.

“Giving special packages to states is under jurisdiction of the Central government; hence we will not comment on Rs 8750 crore package given to West Bengal. But we are opposing the way the government has taken Bihar’s name to justify this package,” said Nitish.

In the letter it has been mentioned that the Bihar’s financial package mentioned by the government is the one allotted to the state at the time of Bihar bifurcation under Bihar Reorganization Act.

This fund was given to Central agencies for state’s roads and electricity transmission and distribution. As per 10th five year plan, from 2002-03 to 2006-07, Rs 1000 crore was to be released every year.

“Central agencies delayed the project, hence the expenses also increased,” Kumar said.

“Now that the Centre has given special package to Bengal for development of its backward areas, we are in a better position to demand special treatment,” added the Chief Minister.
