London: 'Hannah Montana' star Miley Cyrus is urging Twitter bosses to implement new safety controls after she received a number of menacing messages through the social networking website.

The 19-year-old singer-actress was left fuming when one follower told her she "dresses like white trash" and urged her "to die", as reported.

After seeing the vile messages, Cyrus replied, "You have nothing better to do than hate? That saddens me. I'm surrounded by love. I'm sorry for whatever happened to make you so bitter. I won't tolerate someone telling me to die."

Cyrus went on to urge Twitter chiefs to take action against users who post nasty comments.

"I think Twitter needs to take some responsibility and make it a safe environment," she wrote.
