Srinagar: Killing of a woman candidate, Hasina Begum contesting panchayat polls has sent shock waves across Jammu and Kashmir. The militants, who were not happy with peaceful elections in the state, on Friday night barged into her house and resorted to indiscriminate firing, killing her on the spot.

According to reports, the militants had also beaten up two villagers who are in critical conditions.

Although security of the valley has been beefed up in the wake of the killing of woman candidate, several candidates from Parakhpora, Karpora, Shankarpora, Chararipora contesting for the second phase of elections have withdrawn their nominations fearing the militant attack.

Hasina Begum, who was a PDP worker from Parpora-Karpora village, was contesting as Panch in the third phase of polls scheduled on April 21.

ASP Kulbir Singh has confirmed the reports that Divisional Commander of Hizbul Mujahideen, Jahangir, is reported to be responsible for the murder.

However, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has said, although Hasina was killed in the wake of Panchayat polls, the reason of her murder is yet to be ascertained.

Inspector General of Police SM Sahai said since Hasina was also involved in a matrimonial dispute with her husband, her murder cannot be linked with Panchayat elections only.
