Shimla: In a move to provide specialised treatment to HIV/AIDS patients, the Union Ministry of Health has given green signal to introduce one-year Post Graduate Diploma in HIV Medicine. The course will commence from 2012 in Himachal Pradesh in association with IGNOU. Presently, there is no HIV/AIDS specialist doctor in the state.

In an official announcement, Programme Director, State AIDS Control Society, Dr MK Pathak said, “Ministry of Health with the help of IGNOU has launched post graduation course in HIV/AIDS. The expert will provide specific treatment to HIV/AIDS patients.”

The expenses of the course will be incurred by National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO). Only those candidates having MD and have earlier worked with NACO will be given preference for the programme. The organization has asked state government to provide a  list of interested candidates.

NACO has also cleared that it will be mandatory for the doctors pursuing post graduation in HIV/AIDS to provide medical service to the state for two years. If in case they fail to do so, the particular doctor will have to pay the fees of the course, which was earlier incurred by NACO.
