Mumbai, Jan 08 (Agencies): Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) on Saturday got support from unexpected quarters, with Shiv Sena Executive President condemning the assault by policemen on its MLA Harshavardhan Jadhav at Ellora near Aurangabad early this week.

"Policemen mercilessly beat up Jadhav as if he was a robber. Police did not verify whether he was a people's representative. Such policemen should be deployed in Naxal areas," Uddhav told reporters at Sena Bhawan in central Mumbai.

MNS has accused the Khuldabad police of assaulting Jadhav and beating him up mercilessly. Home department has asked the Aurangabad IG to submit a report about the incident.

Home Minister R R Patil said that he was taking the issue of Jadhav's assault 'very seriously'.

Police have accused Jadhav of trying to run over a Sub-Inspector who stopped the legislator's vehicle in the wake of security restrictions for Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan's visit to Ellora. Police said Jadhav told them the security blanket was not applicable to him, as he was a legislator.
