London: Remember the last time your heavy drinking habit was blamed for your putting on weight as it contains high sugar content. A new study has suggested moderate intake of wine can in fact help in shedding weight.

According to the research, drinking a glass of wine a day can stop people piling on the pounds, as a moderate wine-intake could form part of a healthy diet, Daily Express reported.

Weight gain occurs mainly among heavier drinkers rather than those who prefer small amounts of their favourite tipple, say Spanish researchers at Navarro University.

"Light to moderate alcohol intake, especially of wine, may be more likely to protect against, rather than promote, weight gain," said a spokesman for the Navarro University team.

The International Scientific Forum on Alcohol Research agreed with most of the team's conclusions.

For now there is little evidence that moderate amounts of alcohol increase the risk of obesity, it said.
