“Tapan Sikdar ji's demise is extremely saddening. May his soul rest in peace,” Modi said on micro-blogging site Twitter.

Modi said Sikdar’s contribution in strengthening the BJP will always be remembered.
“Shri Tapan Sikdar will be remembered for his rich contribution in building the BJP & his years of dedicated public service,” he tweeted.

Sikdar breathed his last at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here on Monday morning at the age of 70. He was suffering from kidney problem.

One of the architects in the growth of the BJP in West Bengal in the 1990s, Sikdar was a union minister in Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led government from 1999 to 2004. Sikdar was a member of the 12th and 13th Lok Sabha representing Dum Dum (Lok Sabha constituency) in West Bengal.
