"As Ramzan (Ramadan) begins, I convey my greetings and pray that the holy month brings peace and happiness in everyone's life," Modi said in a tweet.

Ramzan fasts started on Monday after the sighting of the moon on Sunday night.

Muslims from across the country thronged mosques in large numbers on the first day of the holy month of Ramzan. Attired in their best and wearing skull caps, men and children were seen heading to the mosques across the cities including Delhi, Agra, Bhopal, Srinagar and Hyderabad on Monday to mark the beginning of the fasting month.

The month is spent in prayer and penance to cleanse one's body and soul.
