Modi decided to field dream girl Hema Malini on prestigious Mathura Parliamentary seat to take on Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) general secretary Jayant Chaudhary.

Hema was Modi’s first choice as BJP’s candidate from the Mathura constituency. In fact, Modi had asked various top BJP leaders and party in-charges to convince the dream girl for contesting elections from Mathura.

The internal wrangling over selecting the right candidate from the Mathura constituency had reached an impasse in the saffron camp, forcing the BJP top brass to seriously weigh up fielding any popular personality from the holy city. A senior BJP leader with RSS backing made all out efforts for a local candidate in Mathura.

It was a foregone conclusion among BJP’s top brass leaders that no local candidate was in a position to give stiff competition to RLD chief Ajit Singh’s son, Jayant. Initially, BJP parliamentary board wanted to field a Jat candidate from Mathura.

According to party sources, Modi was keen to field winnable candidates from the holy trinity of Ayodhya, Mathura and Varanasi.

As the conundrum over selecting ‘apt’ candidate from Mathura hit a log jam, Venkaiah Naidu on March 10 conjured an idea of fielding Hema from Mathura to give a tough fight to Jayant.

Once Hema’s name ticked all the requirements as a suitable party candidate, Naidu discussed it with Shah. Thereby, the party chose not to announce candidate on Mathura seat at the last moment on March 15. The entire episode was so confidential that only Naidu, Modi and Shah were aware of Hema’s candidature.

Before giving a final nod to contest from Mathura, Hema took assurances from Modi for strong election management and a proper mechanism to shun possible internal rebellion over her candidature.

Modi not only guaranteed Hema of every possible help but also promised to hold rally in Mathura. Sources say that Modi had to take RSS in confidence before allotting symbol to Hema.
