Modi, who formally assumed office as the country’s 15th Prime Minister on Tuesday, took to micro-blogging website Twitter to pay homage to Pandit Nehru.

“I pay my tributes to our 1st Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on his Punya Tithi,” said Modi on Twitter.

Born on 14th November 1889, Jawaharlal Nehru was the first Prime Minister after India attained Independence on August 15, 1947. He continued in the office till his death in 1964.

Popularly known as Pandit Nehru among his compatriots, he was one of the key figures in the political arena of pre and post-Independence era.

Nehru, along with Mahatma Gandhi, played an instrumental role in the freedom movement. He showed interest in politics since his young days and went on to become an important leader in the national political domain.

It was Nehru, who as the president of Congress in 1929 called for complete independence from the British rule and prompted the party to play a more pro-nationalistic role.
