“We salute the proud son of India, Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan on his birth anniversary. His courage & bravery live on, inspiring generations,” Modi tweeted.

Major Unnikrishnan, a brave and devoted soldier, laid down his life during ‘Operation Black Tornado’ at the Taj Hotel in Mumbai when he was caught in a volley of bullets fired by terrorists holed up inside the building. His bravery was honoured with the Ashok Chakra on January 26, 2009.

“Do not come up, I will handle them”, were the last words which Major Unnikrishnan told his men as he was hit by bullets while engaging terrorists inside the Taj Mahal Palace and Tower during Operation Black Tornado, according to NSG officials.

Major Unnikrishnan was leading a team of NSG commandos in the Taj operation and was arranging for the evacuation of his men and chased the terrorists to another floor of the Taj Mahal hotel, continuously engaging them in battle. Isolated from the rest of his team, he eventually fell to the bullets of the militants.
