Modi had won against Congress’ Madhusudan Mistry in Vadodra by a record margin of five lakh votes.

He also defeated Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal and Congress’ Ajay Rai from Varanasi. Kejriwal’s entry into the fray had turned it into one of the most keenly watched battles of the Lok Sabha elections. The former Delhi chief, however, lost by more than three lakh votes.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had announced Modi’s name to contest in Varanasi after sitting parliamentarian Murli Manohar Joshi gave in to the pressure from top leadership. Joshi then fought from the Kanpur seat.

In his first ever general election, Modi had contested from both the seats and won by huge margins. Vadodara sent him to Parliament with a near record margin of 5,70,128 votes.
