Mohali: Former Rural Development and Panchayat Minister and currently Punjab Assembly Speaker Nirmal Singh Kahlon have been acquitted in corruption case by a local court here on Wednesday. The Vigilance Department had filed the case on May 25, 2002.

The court also acquitted the then Deputy Director of the Department of Rural Development and Panchayat, JP Singla.
According to reports, the Punjab Vigilance Department had filed a case against Nirmal Singh Kahlon for amassing disproportionate assets from known and unknown sources besides taking bribe in the recruitment of 909 panchayat secretaries and drivers.

The trial had been going on against Nirmal Singh in two different cases in the Mohali Court. The court has acquitted him in recruitment scam case while another case related to purchase of JCB machines is still pending. The hearing of this case is scheduled on May 25.

Coming out of the court, Kahlon said, “Finally, I have got justice after nine years. I have full faith in the judiciary.”
