Colombo: Sri Lanka on Tuesday got a new chief justice in Mohan Peiris, two days after Shirani Bandaranayake was sacked, a news agency reported.

Peiris, a former attorney general who has represented the government at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, was nominated by President Mahinda Rajapaksa and approved by a Parliament council.

Rajapaksa removed Bandaranayake on Sunday after Parliament voted in favour of her impeachment over allegations against her. Bandaranayake challenged the impeachment process, and a court found the process unconstitutional.

The US State Department warned on Monday that the removal of chief justice Bandaranayake could impact on Sri Lanka's ability to attract foreign investment.
