Presiding over the State level Bankers Committee Meeting here, he exhorted the banks to open more branches and bank accounts in rural areas to facilitate direct transfer of benefit of various schemes.

The benefits included accidental insurance up to Rs 1 lakh free of cost without paying any premium.
Mitra said 24 new bank branches were opened in the quarter ending in September, 2014, increasing the total number  of branches to 1859 out of which 1483 were in rural areas. Besides, 43 new ATMs were installed for the benefit of consumers.
UCO Bank Executive Director J.K. Garg said that banks in Himachal had disbursed credit of Rs 4,558 crore to about 2.09 lakh accounts up to September, 2014.

The total business of the banks in the state increased to Rs 96,850 crore up to September, 2014 registering an annual growth of 8.15 percent.
