Movie: Bol Bachchan

Cast: Abhishek Bachchan, Ajay Devgn, Asin, Prachi Desai, Archana Puran Singh

Jagran Rating:      (Disappointing)

Story Line: Bol Bachchan is a remake of Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s classic Gol Maal (1979). Though Rohit Shetty tried his best to recreate the magic in Bol Bachchan, somehow it stood far from the original classic starring yesteryears actors Amol Palekar and late Utpal Dutt.

Abbas (Abhishek Bachchan) is an angry young man, a dotted brother, fighting a court case with his uncle and his family for wrongfully taking over their property after his father's death. Finally, he and sister Sania (Asin) are forced to leave Delhi for Ranakpur along with father's friend Asrani to start a new lease of life. In Ranakpur, Abbas saves a boy from drowning by taking a shortcut to reach the pond and for this he has to break the lock of a temple. In a bid to save Abbas, a Muslim, from the ire of Hindu villagers Shahstri’s son Ravi (Krushna Abhishek) introduces Abbas to the village head Prithviraj (Ajay Devgn) as Abhishek Bachchan. Here a little briefing of Prithviraj is needed. Prithviraj is a wrestler, a connoisseur of English language who speaks incorrect English with sheer confidence. This funny yet powerful wrestler lives in  Ranakpur with his sister Radhika (Prachi Desai). For the further twist and turns in Bol Bachchan you have to book your ticket.

Thumbs up: ‘Bol Bachchan’ revolves around Amol Palekar’s moustache-confusion in ‘Gol Maal’. But for Bol Bachchan Ajay Devgn’s bad English could be considered as the only savior. The way Ajay translated English phrases in his own style will tickle your funny bones for sure. ‘Necessity is the mother of Discovery Channel’, ‘Honesty is the best mutual policy’, ‘When elders are getting cozy, younger don't bring nosey’- are few examples of his hilarious English. Abhishek Bachchan looks nice in his gay avatar and it is needless to mention that he delivers a good performance. Besides, Abhishek’s dance on popular Hindi songs, like Darling (7 Khoon Maaf), Ooh la la (The Dirty Picture) DK Bose (Delhi Belly) is really hilarious. Amitabh Bachchan shakes a leg with Abhishek and Ajay in Bol Bachchan title track. To see Big B in an item number will enthrall his fans for sure.

Thumbs down:
Though it derives inspiration from Gol Maal, Director Rohit Shetty’s version is far cry from the original comedy riot. It’s the opposite of everything Golmaal stood for. It’s loud, over-the-top and filled with pitiable jokes. Bol Bachchan’s story line is poor and Himesh Reshmiya’s music is not at all ear soothing. Veteran actors like Archana Puran Singh and Asrani just disappointed the audiences with their lackluster performance. The action scenes are exaggerated and loud. Before entering to the movie hall, leave your brains at home, and there you have a brilliant comedy film. Don’t expect logic from Bol bachchan just watch it for fun.
