"We have made it mandatory for taxi operators to install GPS-based navigation system in their vehicles to keep a track on their movement," Madhya Pradesh Transport Minister Bhupendra Singh told media.

He was replying to a query whether the state is considering making mandatory implementation of such a system in public transport facilities.

"Directives have been issued to Regional Transport Officers of all districts to ensure registration of taxi operators, that vehicles are fitted with GPS system and police verification of drivers," Singh said.

It will be implemented in other public transport systems also gradually. A 27-year-old finance executive was raped allegedly by a driver of app-based cab booking service Uber in Delhi on Friday night which has triggered widespread outrage.
