Bhopal: The Madhya Pradesh government has sanctioned financial assistance of Rs 1.50 lakh for a descendant of freedom fighter Tatya Tope for his medical treatment.

Financial assistance worth Rs 1.50 lakh has been ordered from the Chief Minister's Discretionary Fund to Gwalior resident Vasant Rao Tope, a descendant of Tatya Tope, for his cancer treatment, officials said on Sunday.

Ramchandra Pandurang, popularly known as Tatya Tope, played a crucial role in the 1857 uprising against the British rule.

He also fought against Britsh forces when they were engaged in a battle with Rani Laxmi Bai of Jhansi. However, he was defeated by them and later executed in Shivpuri town in Madhya Pradesh on April 18, 1859.
