Bhopal: In a novel way to create awareness about drawbacks of female foeticide and consequences of an adverse sex ratio, Madhya Pradesh will celebrate 'Save the girl child' Day on October 5 every year.

In a meeting to review the preparation for the 'save the girl child' campaign, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan said that in order to develop the psyche of celebrating the birth of a girl child in a family, the 'Beti Bachao Abhiyaan Yatra' (save the girl child march) will be conducted in different phases.

The first phase of the programme will begin from Maihar (Satna) on October 11, 2011. In the week-long programme, the yatra will cover Satna, Panna, Tikamgarh and Chhatarpur districts. Also, public meetings will be held at district and Tehsil headquarters.

During the meeting, it was also informed that with the beginning of the Navratras, messages on saving the girl child will also be forwarded on mobile phones.

The Chief Minister asked the religious, spiritual, social activists, NGOs, media and other prominent personalities along with members of different political parties to play a positive role in creating awareness about the importance of a girl child.

This year, the campaign will commence from the Chief Minister’s residence.
