Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh is all set to create a history on January 12, the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekanand, by organizing yogic Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutation) exercise in which more than 50 lakh students are likely to participate.

The state government has made an elaborate arrangement to ensure maximum participation in the Surya Namaskar exercise, which could be recorded in the Guinness Book. Specific instructions have been sent to all schools across the state. The state government has posted two of its employee in each school to count the numbers of children and people involved in the Surya Namaskar.

According to an official, “Apart from all educational institutes, aashrams and panchayats will also become part of this event.”

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister will also participate in this exercise at Government Naveen High School in Arera colony in Bhopal.

State ministers, MPs, MLAs, district panchayat presidents, mayors, representatives of volunteer organisations and common people will participate in this event. School children of class V to XII will take part in this exercise.

The government has also formed a committee in each districts headed by district collector to monitor the happenings.

Meanwhile, leaders of minority termed the move as ‘un-Islamic’ and equated it with idol-worship, which is prohibited in Islam. Muslims leaders have also issued fatwa against Surya Namaskar in the state.

“There is no compulsion, if he/she doesn’t want to become a part of this yogi exercise, they are free to decide,” Shivraj Singh Chouhan said.

Namaskar is a yogic exercise aimed at improving health and those not interested in taking part in it have an option to stay away from it.”
Muslim leaders under the banner of Coordination Committee for Indian Muslims Unit urged Muslim students not to participate in the ‘un-Islamic’ event.

The fatwa was issued on Monday by three shahar muftis Mohammad Abul Kalam Kasmi, Raees Ahmed Khan and Mufti Sayyed Babbar Hussain Nadvi and ratified by shahar Qazi Sayyed Mustaq Ali Nadvi. The fatwa stated – Islam doesn’t allow Surya Namaskar.
