New Delhi: The Central Government might change the mechanism of carrying out the BPL census along with caste census as the Lok Sabha witnessed a fierce pandemonium triggered by the opposition members on the issue.

Leader of the House in Lok Sabha, Pranab Mukherjee assured the House that the exercise would be carried out as per the suggestions made by the members.

Earlier, National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Convener and Janata Dal United (JDU) president Sharad Yadav had suggested a special performa to conduct the census.

As the proceedings commenced in the Lower House, the opposition members raised the issue of caste census. Opposing the Government decision to carry out the BPL census along with caste census, Yadav said it will not bear any fruit.

Echoing Sharad, Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav said all the parties have similar views on the Performa suggested by the former.

“The Prime Minister has himself assured the House to carry out the census. But the Government has created obstacle by linking it with the BPL census.” said Mulayam.

Deputy leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Gopinath Munde and the Bahujan Samaj Party MP Dara Singh Chauhan also supported the move.

Munde said, “No caste census had been carried out since 1939. The Government had sought suggestions from all the parties in black and white.”

Admitting problems in the implementation of the caste census, Mukherjee assured the members that Government would address the shortcomings.
