According to sources, the names of Rohatgi and another top lawyer Harish Salve were making rounds for the post of Attorney-General for India. Sources, however, say Salve has refused taking up the constitutional post citing professional and family commitments.

The name of Rohtagi emerged as the front runner for the top post following consultation with former AG Soli Sorabjee, who had served during the NDA regime from 1999 to 2004.

Rohtagi had successfully defended the Centre in many cases, including the Kudankulam case, in the Supreme Court.

Vahanvati is likely to step down from the post on Tuesday.

Both Salve and Rohatgi worked as law officers during the NDA regime. Salve worked as Solicitor General and Rohatgi as Additional Solicitor General. In 2002, Salve had stepped down from the post of Solicitor General over differences with the then AG Soli Sorabjee.
