Lucknow: Going a step further in offering sops in Uttar Pradesh elections, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav said his government will give jobs to rape victims, if his party is voted back to power.

"Investigations will be ordered against the murderers and rapists and they will be sent to jail. We will help the rape victims and give them jobs," said Mulayam Singh Yadav.

He further stated, “Till the rape victims are not given jobs, they would be paid a monthly allowance of Rs 1000.”

The statement has evoked sharp reactions from the opposition parties. BJP chief spokesman Ravi Shankar Prasad termed it as a ‘cruel joke’.

“Don't check rapes and then talk about jobs to the victims. It's a cruel joke," he said.

"This is a sad statement by Mulayam which would only give rise to insecurities," said Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi.
