New Delhi: Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav on Thursday met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh over the contentious SC/ST quota bill. Post meeting, SP sources said that the party will continue to oppose the bill that BSP has been insisting upon.

On Wednesday, an indignant Mayawati left the Upper House stunned with lashing out at Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari over the bill.

Rajya Sabha on Wednesday could not function because of uproar over the SC/ST quota Bill that provides reservation to SCs/STs in government job promotions whereas the Lok Sabha was paralysed by BSP members who sought details about coal block allocations.

Upset over the fact that lack of order prevented passage of the Constitutional amendment (117th Amendment) Bill, Mayawati had on Wednesday criticised the Rajya Sabha Chairman.

"In the past few days, I have been observing that the House gets adjourned at 12 noon. It is the government and the Chairman's responsibility to put the House in order. If it doesn't happen, I will be forced to take a tough stand,” she had said.

The SP is of the view that reservation in promotion in government jobs for SC/ST candidates would not be fair.
