Mumbai: The Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon, held on January 15, has raised just over Rs 16 crore in charity, an increase of Rs four crore from last year's race.

Spearheaded by United Way of Mumbai, the official charity partner of the event, the Mumbai Marathon 2012 generated "Rs 16.07 crores in charity for causes of their choice," a media release said on Wednesday.

"This figure is an increase of almost Rs 4 crores over the Rs 12.16 crores generated in 2011 and will benefit 197 NGOs as compared to 131 last year," it said.

The charity figures were announced by Mumbai Sheriff Dr Indu Shahani who is also the chairperson of United Way of Mumbai at a special function held to felicitate the fund raisers last night.

Of the total funds raised for charity, Rs 15.13 crores was raised in clearly tracked funds through the marathon's official charity partner, while an estimated amount of Rs 75 lakh was raised directly by NGOs through the event, the release added.
