Lucknow: In a measure to woo Muslim voters, BJP vice-president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi took up the issue of Gujarat riots and appealed the community to try to forget the tragic moments.

He said if the Muslim community can forget the Hashimpur and Maliyana killings which happened during the Congress tenure, they should try to have the same approach regarding the 2002 Gujarat riots. He also requested the community to change its anti-BJP attitude.

During a conversation on Saturday Naqvi said, “The BJP has never seen Muslims in isolation, the community has some misunderstanding about the party and it should be ended.”

Speaking about the Gujarat riots and Babri Mosque demolition in Ayodhya in 1992, Naqvi said top BJP leaders including Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Lal Krishna Advani had never spoken in favour of these issues.

Comparing the Congress tenure with that of BJP, Naqvi said, “Since the time of independence, the country has witnessed 5000 riots during the Congress governance.”
