Greater Noida: Close on the heels of the recent banning of lavish marriage functions by a Mahapanchayat in Greater Noida, an organisation of Muslims on Sunday requested people to keep marriages a low-key affair and stay away from dowry.

In a society welfare conference organised by All India Milli Tanzeem Al-Faiz (AIMTAF) at Dadri, senior members of the organisation urged people not to make marriage an ostentatious function.
"People should know that only the income which is earned through rightful measures give peace," AIMTAF National Coordinator Dr T Ansari said.

Instead of giving dowry people should educate their daughters and help them become financially independent, he said adding, "educated girls will be able to provide education to their children."

Maulana Qari C M Mustafa Dehlavi President AIMTAF said, "there should be ban on DJs, fire woks, display of arms and celebratory firing.

"Campaigns needs to be organised in localities as only when people get aware about the dowry menace it can be eradicated from the society."

Simultaneously, women should be treated with respect, he said. Meanwhile, members of Gujjar Samaj held an awareness panchayat at Daula today and asked people to refrain from lavish wedding functions.
