Kolkata: Mamata Banerjee led-government has on Friday withdrawn petition from the Supreme Court in the 2007 Nandigram firing case in which 14 people were killed while agitating against land acquisition.

The move has paved the way for a CBI probe into the case.

“After the CPI (M) government took the case to the SC, CBI couldn’t probe the case, now as we have withdrawn the petition from the court, CBI can resume its enquiry.” said state law minister Malay Ghatak.

Earlier, Calcutta High Court had termed the Nandigram firing as ‘unconstitutional’ and ordered a CBI investigation into the case.

But the left government had challenged the order in the Supreme Court.

As CBI takes over the case, many top cops responsible for the firing can find themselves in a tight spot.
