Addressing a press conference after arriving in Aizawl for his two-day maiden visit as Union Minister, Rijiju said while states having Hindu majority may enact legislation banning cow slaughter, it could not be imposed on Northeastern states where majority of the people are eating beef.

Terming the recent statement of Naqvi as "not good", Rijiju, however, said Naqvi was using his freedom of speech and expression.

He said the cultures, traditions, habits and sentiments of all the people in the country should be respected and honoured.

Last week, Naqvi had defended the ban on cow slaughter and beef in two BJP-ruled states, Maharashtra and Haryana. Many Congress leaders slammed Naqvi for his remarks on beef eaters.
